The TV Tower and I think the fountain of Zues
Humboldt University Library which has Bebelplatz in front of it. This was the location of one of the most historical Nazi Book burnings with the memorial for it below.
Many memorials use the presence of absence to make you remember what happened. In this instance the shelves are empty of books symbolizing all the books that were burned.
The Brandenburg Gate
Germany's capital building The Reichstag
One day for class we went to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp outside of Berlin. I had wanted to visit a concentration camp while in German, and was glad I got the opportunity. They are definitely a place of sadness and something you should really do your own journey through, rather than in a group. It's hard to explain the emotions you feel when walking around.
This is the main gate into the facility. "Arbeit Macht Frei" means something along the lines of "work is freeing" or "work will free you"
Berlin has a cultural festival every year in May. This was a really cool event complete with food from all over the world, beer, a parade, and loads of people.
I think the city was expecting around 1.5 million people. I'm pretty sure that happened.
One location we went to for class was the Kaiser Wihelm Gedächtnis Kirche. If you ask me it is rather ugly on the outside, but due to the way it was constructed it is gorgeous inside.
This is a shot of the windows and organ.
We took a trip to Dresden, which has some great old looking buildings that were rebuilt after the war.
The Frauenkirche is probably the most famous of these buildings and is really pretty on the inside.
When they rebuilt the church, they tried to make it look like it did when it was first built.
While in Dresden I got to go see Die Gläserne Manufaktur.
It is Volkswagen's factory where they make the Phaeton. It is super cool on the inside and very ergonomic and efficient at producing the car. You should look it up so you can see some videos or pictures on the manufacturing process. I didn't get to do a tour of the factory or take pictures.
On Friday I left to go meet a friend in Nürnberg.
This is a picture of us in Nürnberg. I met Kate last summer while I was in Braunschweig, and she stayed here in Germany to continuing studying and then work abroad.
That night we traveled to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and checked into our hostel.
All the buildings in Rothenburg are extremely old and pretty cool looking!
We walked around quite a bit on Saturday, going outside the wall, on the wall, and through the city.
The view from a door to get outside the wall close to our hostel.
We walked through a vineyard just outside the wall.
Walking along the wall!
View from up in a tower.
I found it funny that the sign to Hell is also in the direction of the puppet and doll museum. Everybody knows that dolls are creepy!
Oh yeah and I guess I didn't mention I went to Hell!
It's a bar and restaurant! They actually have a pretty lengthy wine list and is maybe more romantic than I'm sure the other hell is.
We also had the chance to do the Nightwatchmen's Tour! Pretty fun little tour around the town and quite funny!
While in Rothenburg I did break down and purchase some lederhosen! So hopefully there will be a picture of those later on! Get excited!
Well I think that's mostly everything I've done now! Not sure when the next one will be coming, but possibly soon. Either way I have one week left in Berlin, then I will be going to Stockholm for a few days to visit a friend!
